Begun in 1872 and finished in 1879, the Michigan State Capitol is a tall Renaissance Revival building featuring a towering dome with many windows that allow light to pour down into the main lobby past painted figures and careful ornamentation. Tours of the building are led by knowledgeable guides, who inform visitors of the history of the state and the building while traveling around the public areas of the capitol and the House and Senate chambers, if they are not in session. Set right in the heart of Lansing, the capitol faces out to the Grand River, just two blocks to the east, and is connected to the Michigan Library & Historical Center via a pedestrian overpass.
